Recognizing Depression

While it is recommended and most beneficial for anyone with a suspected mental illness to seek professional help, some may not even know how to recognize that they have a problem. While everyone handles depression differently, and mental illnesses can manifest in a multitude of ways, there are some warning signs that someone is dealing with or even knowingly hiding their depression. This quick checklist gives some of the most prevelant warning signs of possible depression.

  • Struggle with maintaining any good, healthy intimate relationships.
  • Concerned about helping others but does not allow anyone to help them.
  • Struggle with day to day activities and basic life skills.
  • Extreme perfectionism and negative self-talk.
  • Isolating oneself from people and activities that used to be pleasant.
  • Inability to focus on tasks.
  • Using accomplishments to measure self worth as a human being.
  • Refuses to recognize hurtful encounters or relationships.
  • Feels responsible for everything and everyone around them.
  • Inability to express emotions in a constructive way or at all.
  • Feels numb to everything, inability to feel any emotion.
  • Often feels guilty about things that were beyond their control.
  • Extreme fatigue or tiredness no matter how much sleep you get.
  • Not being able to fall or stay asleep.
  • Feeling irritable most of the time, even over small things that normally wouldn’t gain a reaction.
  • Excessive worry about the future or the past.
  • Turns to alcohol and drugs for comfort or to feel normal.
  • Has thought about not wanting to live any longer, or voiced feeling that they wish they were not alive.
  • Inability to make and stick with decisions.
