Warning Signs of Alcoholism

One of the greatest dangers of alcohol consumption is it’s addictive quality, and the fact that most people don’t realize that they have a problem until it is too late. Often times, once a person realizes that they or a loved one has a drinking problem it is only because it has become such an issue that it is causing major problems in their lives. Below is a list of some often overlooked warning signs that you or a loved one may have a drinking problem.

  • You have a hard time leaving a restaurant or other social gathering if you have a half empty drink.
  • Drinking allows you and causes you to ignore your financial responsibilities.
  • Friends or family have said something about your drinking, even in a joking manner.
  • You have lied about the amount or how often you drink.
  • You have forgotten or had memory loss due to drinking.
  • You use alcohol as a way to make yourself feel better or cheer up on a daily basis.
  • You drink so that you can tolerate people or events.
  • You feel like or people tell you that you become a different person when you drink.
  • The amount of money that you spend on alcohol has caused problems.
  • You have had legal trouble, such as DUIs or public intoxication citations, due to drinking.
  • You drink during work or school.
  • Drinking has caused you to be late to work or school, or other important events.
  • You have been sick on numerous occasions and missed work or school due to alcohol consumption.
  • You feel shaky after sobering, or if you go too long without a drink.

These are just some of the most commonly overlooked warning signs for an addiction to alcohol.
